Bird & Bird in Japan
Bird & Bird has been assisting Japanese clients all over the world on various legal issues for several decades. In 2024, they expanded their presence in Tokyo by establishing a foreign law joint enterprise, enhancing their ability to further empower Japanese business to grow in a world of increasingly dynamic and rapid technology development.

Their Tokyo office (Bird & Bird Gaikokuho Kyodo Jigyo Houritsu Jimusho) offers legal services to clients in key industry sectors such as automotive, renewable energy, life sciences, and technology and media in outbound cross-border transactions from Japan to UK, Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region, working with other Bird & Bird offices around the globe.
The entire Tokyo team is bilingual in Japanese and English, and their lawyers are Japanese and/or overseas qualified, including in English law. They have native Japanese speakers in China and London and non-native speakers elsewhere in Europe and the Middle East all of whom work closely to support our Japanese clients globally.
Bird & Bird’s affiliated consulting company, OXYGY, also has an office in Tokyo enabling them to provide combined business & legal solutions for our clients internationally.

Why did you join the BCCJ?
'We joined the BCCJ to be an active part of the UK–Japan business community—contributing legal, sector and regulatory insights where technology, innovation and international growth intersect. As Japanese companies pursue digitalisation and decarbonisation agendas, we see BCCJ as the ideal forum to exchange ideas and spark practical collaborations that strengthen UK–Japan ties.'
What do you most hope to gain from your time as a member?
'We want to get to know the BCCJ community on a more personal level by hearing what matters to members and staying close to the issues they navigate day-today. We hope to exchange ideas and join conversations that help us all move forward. We also hope to involve more of our colleagues into so they can connect, collaborate and feel part of the community as well.'
What kind of collaborations or connections are you most interested in building through the BCCJ?
'We are interested in co-hosting briefings and panels with fellow members in areas where our sector knowledge can add value. We are particularly keen to have discussions around the topics linked to technology, innovation and international growth.'
